Christchurch is the South Island's biggest city, so called because of a man who used to attend Christ Church in Oxford, England |
My brother was here a few years back and thought it reminded him of Cambridge, but the earthquake in February, 2011 has meant that the whole of the city centre is closed |
It's very sad |
In fact, the day we got there, they were opening up some temporary shops there, made from shipping containers, the first step on a long road of recovery |
Most structures are cordened off, the 19th century cathedral will be demolished with only a wing being able to be restored |
Any spires that survived the quake were removed so the powerful aftershocks didn't bring them down |
Sounds bad, but whoever came up with the idea did a fab job |
Will probably be a 'temporary' thing to stay |
