New Zealand - Christchurch

Christchurch is the South Island's biggest city, so called because of a man who used to attend Christ Church in Oxford, England

My brother was here a few years back and thought it reminded him of Cambridge, but the earthquake in February, 2011 has meant that the whole of the city centre is closed

It's very sad

In fact, the day we got there, they were opening up some temporary shops there, made from shipping containers, the first step on a long road of recovery

Most structures are cordened off, the 19th century cathedral will be demolished with only a wing being able to be restored

Any spires that survived the quake were removed so the powerful aftershocks didn't bring them down

Sounds bad, but whoever came up with the idea did a fab job

Will probably be a 'temporary' thing to stay
